CASE STUDY
Port of Melbourne: Webb Dock 4 &5
20+ Years of Leadership in Large-Scale CP Deployment
The Port of Melbourne handles more than one-third of Australia’s container trade and Webb Dock Berths 4 & 5 within the Port is Australia’s first fully automated container terminal.
The scale of the structure at over 900m long presented unprecedented challenges for a CP installation: how do you protect hundreds of metres of steel piling and concrete, with space constraints and no access to the top deck of the wharf, whilst maintaining effective CP control and oversight?
Traditional centralised ICCP would have required massive copper cable runs and installation infrastructure under the wharf. Omniflex’s distributed “smart” transformer/rectifier architecture changed the equation:

By placing intelligent power supply nodes close to protected elements, we reduced copper requirements by 30–50% whilst increasing the number of controllable zones from a handful to hundreds.
Ten years later the system is still providing effective corrosion control to international standards with over 800 independently controlled and monitored zones and 1200 referenc electrodes. And requirement to access the underside of the wharf is reduced to a minimum with all CP testing and adjustment being handled through a single touch screen at the end of the wharf and through the PowerView web portal.
