Special K-ellanova alarm upgrade
Omniflex upgrades faulty MPAS 90 alarms at a major cereal manufacturing facility in North Wales
The Challenge: Ageing Systems & Missing Support
Kellanova’s Wrexham facility in North Wales—the world’s largest producer of Special K cereal—relied on legacy Highland MPAS 90 rack-based alarms across three substations. Because the original manufacturer went out of business, finding replacement parts and technical support for these ageing, critical systems became impossible.

The Solution: A Direct Retrofit
When the obsolete units neared the end of their service lives, Kellanova turned to alarm specialist Omniflex. Following a thorough site survey, Omniflex provided a direct retrofit solution using its SIL-1 rated Omni16R rack-based alarm logic and Omni-X LED Displays, modernising the system without requiring major structural changes.
Phase-by-Phase Installation
The upgrade is being rolled out sequentially to ensure a smooth transition across the facility’s three substations; work on Substation 1 is successfully completed, the upgrade for Substation 2 is currently in progress, and Substation 3 is scheduled to follow shortly.
